Galveston Island is a small, narrow barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the southeastern coast of the Texas mainland about 50 miles southeast of Houston. Much of the island is occupied by the town of Galveston, home to about 56,000 people as of 2009. As a popular tourist and vacation area, Galveston has a fair number of hotels in different locations around the island, offering lodging at a variety of price ranges.
